Shampoo

Have you ever wondered, “what’s the best shampoo for my hair?” Shampoo today promises to have a multitude of benefits for your hair, from repairing, creating great condition and shine, to healing split ends. All this hype is just that, hype. Shampoo is created to clean hair. To what degree is what you must consider.

Things to consider when choosing a Shampoo:

1. Is my hair fine?

2. Is my hair thick?

3. Is my hair color treated or highlighted?

4. Is my hair permanent waved?

5. Is my hair curly?

6. Has my hair been chemically straightened?

7. Is my hair oily?

8. Do I have a scalp condition i.e. dry skin, psoriasis, eczema or dandruff?

The answer to all these questions is how to determine what the best shampoo is for your hair.

Consider a volumizing shampoo for fine hair. Fine hair seeks protein. If you place a moisturizing shampoo or conditioner on fine hair…. guess what?  Yes, you said it…limp hair. Shampooing with a mild volumizing shampoo cleans hair without any added weight. You will then condition with a protein conditioner for shiny, healthy, beautiful hair.

If your fine hair is color treated, permanently waved or chemically straightened, a sodium laurel sulfate free shampoo that is gentle, without moisture, will help your color stay longer and your perm and straightener will remain in the hair longer. You can add protein with your conditioner.

Thick hair on the other hand has more than it’s share of protein. What thick hair lacks is moisture. A moisturizing shampoo is the way to clean thick hair. Add additional moisture with a deep conditioning treatment. Thick curly hair that has had a keratin smoothing treatment (straightened) will require a sodium laurel sulfate free shampoo, as well.

Keep In Mind:

Shampoo is specifically created to CLEAN Hair and that’s it!

If the ad says it will condition as well, put it back and say “No thanks.”

Oily hair must be able to clean hair and leave the scalp with what we call an “Acid mantle”, which is,  a ph between 4.5 and 5.5 which is the optimum ph for hair and skin. Water and alcohol have a PH of 7. With a mild surfactant you will be leaving the scalp at the correct ph so that the Oils glands stay calm and don’t overproduce to compensate for a harsh shampoo.

Shampoo for scalp conditions, such as dandruff, dry skin, psoriasis and eczema can be prescribed by your physician, however I believe that shampoo that is gentle on hair and the scalp can only help any skin condition you may have.
